Welcome to the COA 2

Jul25

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to write a first post for a new blog.

I was tempted to not bother and just let the site speak for itself as we got under way but then I felt that it might not be fair to the truly awesome writers who have decided to come together on this site to share their awesomeness with the world.

The idea came to me late one night, probably high off of coffee and no doubt sugar in the cheeky guise of mint slice biscuits (which are my weakness, so much so that they have been banished from the house).  The idea was that I have a really nice group of people who mill around my blog and a couple of the blogs I visit.  People who I have come to consider my friends despite having never met them in person.  A couple of these friends and I have been looking for projects to work together on  and I’ve been thinking about this idea of community for a while.

A very long and rambling email was shot off to Matthew Caverhill that I had a rough idea to form a community blog based around the community that we were both a part of already.  I promised to draft better thought out ideas and promptly registered the domain.

Then after one of our Midnight Movie Club podcast recording sessions Dan Hughes and I got to talking about this idea I had and what might be cool and if he’d be a part of it considering that he already has a bunch on his plate.  Of course Dan is a glutton for punishment and overcommitting so he agreed to be a founding member.

The band at this stage was coming together nicely despite me providing no details or clear direction.  Dan and Matt are “go to guys” when it comes to trying to get something off the ground.  Both gave really great feedback and encouragement.

So now I had the vaguest plan for a community and two guys already in, it was now time to drop this on the rest of the team.  Arjan Beens was away at the time so I just assumed he was in and put his name down.  That’s Arjan for you, hard working and ready to be committed to things in his absence.  I once asked people to send me a photo of them wearing plastic beads ala Jerry Springer, Arjan went out and found crazy Dutch people to pose in these beads, to this day I don’t even want to know what he told them!

Jeff Caddick has guest spotted on the Midnight Movie Club twice now I believe, once even standing in for the big man himself Dan, he barely even questioned where this was going and confirmed that he was in.  Honestly he didn’t really have any choice, he had to be in, he’s really the only one of us who I consider has any moral integrity at all and he likes the things that I like so it was a given.  If he had said no I would have put him down any way.

Finally the newest member of this poorly formed community was SG-3.  Now there was discussion about using our real names on the blog, since I always use my name it was nothing to consider.  The same way that SG-3 always uses that name online, there was really nothing for him to consider though he did consider it.  But that’s his name online and personally I think it’s as valid as any “real world” name.  SG-3 comes to us with possibly the least blogging experience which personally I find really exciting because it adds to this mixing pot we have here.

A couple of Australians, a Canadian, an American, a Dutchmen and an Englishman all of varying ages, backgrounds and blogging experience.

The Coalition of Awesomeness is where we come together to write about awesome stuff based around a theme each fortnight and to help promote each other’s sites.

The first topic we’re going with is:

Your fondest gaming memory…

I’m expecting this site to be a mixing pot of styles and ideas and I’m just really looking forward to it!
